Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences (CBMS)

Welcome to the info page for the 2025 National Survey of Undergraduate Mathematical Sciences Programs, an NSF-funded effort organized by the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences (CBMS). This survey is conducted every five years to gather information about common practices and emerging trends of undergraduate mathematics and statistics education in the United States. RMC Research is proud to partner with CBMS to administer the CBMS 2025 National Survey.

The CBMS 2025 National Survey will gather information from a stratified random sample of U.S. departments in the mathematical sciences across two-year and four-year institutions. If you received an invitation to take the survey, please continue reading to learn more about the survey and how to participate.

Who do I contact with questions?

If you have questions or need support, you can reach out to CBMS@rmcres.com.

Who is leading this effort?

The CBMS 2025 National Survey is a collaboration between CBMS, the American Mathematical Society (AMS), the American Statistical Association (ASA), the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC), and RMC Research Corporation. The presidents of each mathematical sciences organization have endorsed this survey and ask for your engagement. The CBMS 2025 leadership team includes:

Ellen Kirkman <kirkman@wfu.edu>, Survey Director

April Strom <april.strom@cgc.edu>, Director for the Two-Year Survey

David Bressoud <bressoud@macalester.edu>, Principal Investigator for the NSF grant

Charlie Steinhorn <steinhorn@vassar.edu>, Director, CBMS

Chandra Lewis <CBMS@rmcres.com>, Lead Researcher at RMC Research

Ben Skillman <CBMS@rmcres.com>, Director of Data Collection at RMC Research

What is the purpose of the CBMS survey?

CBMS organizes this national survey of undergraduate mathematical and statistical science departments in the nation's four-year and two-year universities and colleges. The survey has been administered every five years since 1960 and collects data on enrollments, curricula, Bachelor's degrees awarded, course availability, faculty demographics, and how departments incorporate AI in their teaching practices.

These data are of use to academic planners at all levels and department chairs seeking additional resources from college and university administrators. Survey results are used at the state and national level in making a case for greater attention to and funding for programs in mathematics, statistics, science, and technology.

For more information about the survey including reports from past survey administrations between 1970 and present, click here.

Why is there a survey and a separate data request?

This administration of the survey differs from past administrations. In prior years, the department chair would fill out an extensive survey, reporting their course listings and enrollments. After analyzing focus groups and pilot surveys to streamline the process, the CBMS 2025 leadership team decided to split the survey into two parts: the Department Chair Survey and the Institutional Data Request.

First, the chair will respond to the Department Chair Survey in Qualtrics, answering questions regarding the mathematics or statistics department/division at their respective institution. Your institution may or may not offer a major or degree in mathematics, but your responses will provide valuable information about the mathematics courses at your institution.

Second, the department chair will send the Institutional Data Request to their Institutional Research office, Institutional Effectiveness office, or the Registrar's office if your institution does not have an IR/E office. The request contains instructions for transferring data about enrollments and other non-FERPA protected data.

What am I being asked to do for the Department Chair Survey?

You are being asked to complete a Qualtrics survey regarding the mathematics or statistics department or division at your institution. The survey contains questions relating to remote learning, instructional strategies, courses offered, degrees awarded, and several other topics.

How long will the Department Chair Survey take?

Individual completion times will vary. The survey is arranged in sections that can be completed in any order. Partial work on a section can be saved and you do not need to complete the survey in one sitting. If you leave the survey, you can return where you left off using the same internet browser. We ask that you complete the survey by November 11, 2025.

Who should complete the Department Chair Survey?

The survey should be completed by the person who is directly in charge of the mathematics or statistics program or department at your institution, such as the department chair or an academic dean. If you are no longer the chair or feel that someone else at your institution is better equipped to complete the survey, please forward the data collection email (sent in October 2026) to that person who and inform us at CBMS@rmcres.com so we can update our contact information accordingly.

What am I being asked to do for the Institutional Data Request?

A detailed data request will be sent to you by the mathematics and/or statistics department chair, dean, or liaison at your institution. The data request explains the exact data requested, a sample data frame, sample data submission, and instructions for submitting the data through a secure SharePoint link.

When do I need to complete the Institutional Data Request?

Please submit the requested data by March 31, 2026 or contact CBMS@rmcres.com as soon as possible if that deadline is not feasible for your office.

Is the survey or data request asking for any FERPA-protected information?

No. The CBMS 2025 National Survey and Institutional Data Request does not request any FERPA-protected data.

Has this project been reviewed by an IRB?

Yes, the CBMS 2025 National Survey and the Institutional Data Request have been reviewed and approved by BRANY IRB Services (BRANY File #728424).

Who is providing financial support for this survey?

The National Science Foundation has provided funding for this national survey under Grant No. 2336355.

Are my survey answers kept private?

All survey responses you provide will be kept confidential, stored in a secured location, and available only to research staff directly involved in the project. Your raw data will not be made available to your institution. We assure you that no individual departmental data, except the names of responding departments, will be released. Your information collected as part of this national survey, even if identifiers are removed, will not be used or distributed for any other purposes.

How will the data be transferred and protected?

Data for the Institutional Data Request will be transferred using a secure site upload through SharePoint. Each institution will be provided with a link to transfer data securely. The secure site upload functions like a library book return slot. Data cannot be viewed, downloaded, or accessed using the secure link; data can only be uploaded. Once uploaded, these files can only be accessed by RMC Research staff.

Will I be compensated?

After the data collection is complete (i.e., once a complete survey and the data request have been submitted by your institutional research/effectiveness office), the department chair will have the option to receive $200 off a membership to AMATYC, AMS, or MAA or choose a free membership for SIAM for an early career faculty member who is not a member of SIAM. The survey completion deadline is set for November, and the enrollment data request is due by March 2026. The project team will reach out to the department chair to coordinate the membership sign-up and handle the payment to the organization in April 2026.

What if I change my mind?

The survey is completely voluntary and you may withdraw at any time. Your participation in the survey will not impact your relationship or your institution's relationship with CBMS and will not impact your relationship with your institution. The membership compensation described above will only apply to departments that complete both the survey and data request.

What are the risks and benefits?

We do not anticipate any direct benefits to completing the survey. Your participation in the survey will generate valuable data. For an example of how this data can be used, feel free to check out this blog post from the Mathematical Association of America by David Bressoud. We do not anticipate any risks to your participation in the survey.
