Boise State University (BSU) was awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) Noyce Teacher Scholarship and Stipend Grant Phase III project. Closing the Loop seeks to recruit undergraduate STEM majors and prepare them to become Grades 6-12 STEM teachers in high-need, rural school districts. The project aims to prepare teachers to enter the profession with knowledge of the systemic barriers that limit equitable instruction for a range of students, so they become better advocates for the interests and needs of their increasingly diverse communities. This project also has a goal to identify mechanisms that support an increase in the number of teachers, particularly with respect to the needs of rural, isolated districts. The project builds upon the success and lessons learned from the BSU Noyce I and Noyce II programs and is aligned with the existing teacher preparation programming. RMC Research is conducting an external evaluation of the project that uses longitudinal design and examines a combination of qualitative and quantitative data to document changes undertaken as part of the project and their effects.
